The Hudson Motor Car Company was founded in Detroit in 1909 by Joseph L. Hudson and other businessmen. It became known for innovations like the "Super Six" engine in 1913 and its successful "step-down" design, which gave its cars a lower center of gravity and excellent handling. The company's fortunes peaked in the 1920s but declined in the 1950s, leading to its 1954 merger with Nash-Kelvinator to form American Motors Corporation (AMC). The Hudson brand continued briefly but was discontinued after the 1957 model year.
